Countess Elizabeth Bathory, who tortured and killed 612 young women, became known as Hungary's national monster. She believed that she could attain eternal youth and beauty if she bathed in the blood of virgins. Her crimes were documented in some detail in her diary, and the horror of what she did is believed to have partly inspired Bram Stoker to write the novel 'Dracula.' Notice I said *PARTLY* inspired. A number of commenters at my Elfwood gallery have informed me that no, no! it was Count Vlad Tepes, known as Vlad the Impaler, who inspired Stoker to write "Dracula." This is partly true, and I did not say that Elizabteh was his sole inspiration. Some people read a few words of a description and get all carried away.
