~:Young Galadriel:~

August, 2002.
Medium: Corel Painter 7.

Not related to the movie Galadriel in any way, this is my personal vision of her as a younger woman. The Epilogue fantasy archive suggested that members draw their own interpretations of Lord of the Rings characters, and this was my contribution. I also posted the picture at Elfwood, where it got a good reception, and was awarded Moderator's Choice. However two Elfwood members tore it apart on the premise that "it doesn't look like Galadriel." (Excuse me for trying to be original, and using my own concept.) I calmly and rationally defended the picture in my two responses to these young women, reiterating that this was my personal vision of the character, and that, as an artist, I was entitled to my own interpretation.

One of those members, who had told me that my Galadriel looked like a Prom Queen - too "typical," too "human" - emailed me a vicious letter, telling me that I MUST accept her critique if I wanted to become an artist some day. I am serious. This is what she told me. She was practically frothing at the mouth, and quite nasty. How dare I defend my own work! I must listen to her, because obviously she knew more about how that character should be painted. Somebody apparently forgot to tell her that all "critiques" are not created equal, and if the person criticizing is fueled by any sort of bitterness or jealousy, rather than total subjectivity, then that critique has no validity.
